- The history of the motorcycle
When someone mentions motorcycle racing many automatically think of MotoGP, The likes of Rossi, Caparossi, and Hayden throwing there so called death-traps' around circuits from The UK to Malaysia with one man mainly dominating the Championship throughout. Although very enjoyable to watch I would personally argue that it is becoming slightly similar to F1 (but much more exciting!) and the powers that be will find it very difficult to change rules to stop this from happening. Being a motorcycle racing Fan myself I do enjoy watching the range of motorcycle racing from the British superbikes up to the MotoGP. However this is mainly on the television and as with many sports you don't get the atmosphere on the box. If you attend it costs a lot of money and u usually end up in a large traffic jam trying to get there due to the popularity.
Road Racing on The other hand is very different. Circuits such a s Oliver's mount, Macau, Billown and the TT Circuit are all raced on public roads. Lampposts, hedges, Walls add to the excitement. The fact that anyone can do it is also an advantage. The big names such as McGuiness, Lougher, Martin are top professional road racers and are put up against Mr nobody's on similar machinery with similar or more knowledge or the roads make it difficult for the big guns to dominate and you could get an up and coming new rider up against the professionals. A huge example of this is Ian Hutchinson who has made a name for himself before moving up to bigger teams. Although these riders' sign for big teams and many do British superbike rounds they still return to the smaller circuits. Another example is Carl Fogarty, four times world superbike champion started racing in the Isle of man TT.
Spectators at road racing circuits are much closer to the action and being in some cases less than three meters from the action is very exciting; riders are within inches of each other as they approach corners at high speeds. This is true racing and the riders have established themselves professionally. The costs are kept down and in cases such as the Isle of Man it's free and only costs to get into grandstands and special viewing areas.
I am in no way trying to covert any hardcore motorcycle racing fans to ditch GP, nor am I saying this is a cheap alternative to it, this is top level motorcycle racing with competitors from around the globe. I don't feel road racing wants or needs the publicity of the same standard as MotoGP or the world superbikes as this would spoil the exclusiveness. Riders who are both professional and not, talk and swap parts as they all are there for the same reason, to race. This is a very enjoyable area of the sport and I would certainly advise any motorcycle racing fans to attend a club or road race meeting as it can give just as much enjoyment as the larger scale MotoGP rounds.
