Obama to urge Congress to shutter Fannie, Freddie

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama, seeking to buffer taxpayers from future housing market downturns, will urge Congress this week to back bipartisan efforts to shutter Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the mortgage-giants bailed out by the government in 2008.Obama will also renew his calls for sweeping mortgage refinancing legislation when he travels to Phoenix Tuesday. Arizona's desert capital was the epicenter of the housing crisis that began in 2008, but the market there has rebounded strongly, with home prices up and foreclosures down. The president's visit to Phoenix marks the latest stop on his summertime economic tour aimed at refocusing his agenda on middle class Americans still struggling to fully recover following the recession. The collapse of the housing market in particular had a dramatic impact on people's lives and the economic viability of communities across the country."So many Americans across the country view their own economic and financial circumstances through their homes and whether they own a home, whether their home is underwater, whether they feel like they have equity in their homes," White House spokesman Jay Carney said Monday.Senior administration officials said Obama would focus in Phoenix on shifting more of the burden for supporting the nation's massive mortgage market to the private sector. A centerpiece of that effort is his support for winding down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.The White House has already lauded efforts to achieve that goal spearheaded by Republican Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee and Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia. While Obama will outline his own proposals on Tuesday, his plans are largely in line with the bipartisan Senate overhaul.Officials said Obama will insist that the government only step in to pay out mortgage guarantees after private capital has been exhausted and that private capital bear the substantial majority of any losses. He will also call for Fannie and Freddie's investment portfolios to be wound down by at least 15 percent per year.Obama advisers did not outline a specific timeframe for winding down Fannie and Freddie. The Corker-Warner legislation would shutter the operations within five years.Fannie and Freddie were nationalized during the 2008 financial collapse and bailed out with $187 billion in taxpayer-funded loans. The two enterprises don't directly make loans, but buy mortgages from lenders, package them as bonds, guarantee them against default and sell them to investors.Fannie and Freddie currently own or guarantee half of all U.S. mortgages and back nearly 90 percent of new ones.Against the backdrop of Phoenix's reinvigorated housing market, Obama will also tout refinancing proposals that gained little traction on Capitol Hill when he first unveiled them last year. Among his proposals is a call for expanding refinancing eligibility for homeowners who do not have government-backed mortgages. The president will also look to link his housing proposals to immigration reform, his top second term legislative priority. Officials said he will argue that legal immigration can stimulate the housing market, noting that immigrants accounted for 40 percent of new homeowners nationwide between 2000 and 2010, according to the Obama administration. The officials insisted on anonymity in order to preview the president's remarks ahead of his trip. The nationwide housing recovery has been providing critical support to the economy at a time when manufacturing and business investment have stagnated. Steady job growth and low mortgage rates in the past year have also fueled more home sales. The increased demand, along with a tight supply of homes for sale, has pushed home prices higher. That's encouraged builders to start more homes and create more construction jobs. The recovery in Phoenix is emblematic of the larger improvements happening in many parts of the country.Just two years ago, the region was in the throes of the worst housing collapse in the country, with prices down nearly 60 percent from their June 2006 peak and banks foreclosing on 70,000 homeowners a year. While the current median home price remains below peak, the levels have risen 66 percent from September 2011. Buyers are plentiful and homes for sale scarce, leading to bidding wars for resale homes._Associated Press writer Bob Christie in Phoenix contributed to this report._Follow Julie Pace at http://twitter.com/jpaceDCBecome a fan of our G+ page for the most intriguing stories of the day. … More »Are you on Facebook?

Gavin MJ "Dikeroyok" JKT48

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — Vokalis remaja, Gavin MJ (13), mengaku optimistis akan membawa pulang trofi Dahsyatnya Awards 2013 untuk kategori Aksi Panggung Terdahsyat. Ia bersaing dengan group idol JKT48, trio dangdut Trio Macan, boyband XO IX, dan vokalis pop Syahrini.

"Harus optimistis dong. Tapi, kalau enggak menang juga enggak apa-apa," kata putra perancang busana Lenny Agustin ini seusai jumpa pers Dahsyatnya Awards 2013: Wujudkan Kedahsyatan Cintamu, di Rolling Stone Cafe, Jakarta Selatan, Rabu (16/1/2013).

Gavin memang tak memandang sebelah mata nomine lainnya. "Siapa yang enggak kenal Syahrini? Dia penyanyi hebat," pujinya.

Obama visits Jay Leno: ‘Odds of dying in a terrorist attack are a lot lower than they are of dying in a car accident’

By Eric Pfeiffer, Yahoo! NewsReporterLOS ANGELES - President Obama wrapped up his Western swing with an appearance on NBC’s “Tonight Show.” In a wide-ranging interview with the late night talk show host, Obama discussed recent terrorist threats, Hillary Clinton, the NSA controversy and whether the U.S. might boycott the 2014 Winter Olympic games in Russia.

"The odds of dying in a terrorist attack are a lot lower than they are of dying in a car accident, unfortunately," Obama said when asked by Leno if it is still safe for Americans to travel abroad in light of recent heightened terrorist threats. Obama denied that the U.S. has a domestic spying program but said the work done by the National Security Agency (NSA) is a “critical component” in keeping the country safe from outside threats. "We don’t have a domestic spying program,” he said. “What we do have is some mechanisms that can track a phone number or an email address that is connected to a terrorist attack. That information is useful." However, Obama did acknowledge that recent accusations of the government spying on average Americans has “raised a lot of questions for people.”

In a lighter exchange, Obama was asked about his lunch meeting with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Obama did not get into the specifics of the meeting with his former campaign rival but joked about Clinton's "glow" since leaving government. "We had a great time and she had that post-administration glow," Obama told Leno. "When folks leave the White House, like two weeks later, they look great!"

Obama also had kind words for another former rival, John McCain.

When Leno asked Obama about his blossoming "bromance" with the Arizona Republican, Obama joked, "That's how classic romantic comedies go." He went on to say, "He is a person of integrity. He is willing to say things, regardless of the politics ... It's probably not good for me to compliment him on television."

Leno was also asked about former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, who has recently received a one year asylum in Russia after leaking classified information about U.S. intelligence programs. "We don’t know exactly what he did, except what he said on the Internet and it's important for me not to judge," Obama said. However, Obama did say that in light of the incident he has asked the White House staff to look at ways of reducing the number of contract employees employed by federal agencies. As to Russia’s decision to grant Snowden temporary asylum, Obama said he did not think that, or the recent controversy surrounding Russia’s stance on gay rights would deter the U.S. from participating in next year’s Winter Olympic games in Sochi, Russia. "I think Putin and Russia have a big stake in making sure the Olympics work," he said. "I think they understand that for most of the countries that participate in the Olympics, we wouldn't tolerate gays and lesbians being treated differently," he said.

A summer 2011 story in Mashable discussed the top ways in which museums are going digital. Here's part of one of the ways:

"Most museum-goers aren't going to turn off their phones during a visit. Rather than fight the tide, many museums are integrating mobile into their exhibits. ....

"Museums are creating fun competitions out of their exhibits using SCVNGR, a social, location-based gaming platform. For example, the Smithsonian hosted a SCVNGR hunt through nine of its museum's most popular exhibits between June 24 and July 26."

"By going places and doing challenges, players can earn points. They are also able to broadcast where they are and what they're up to to their friends on Facebook and Twitter. By doing challenges, players can unlock badges and real-world rewards, such as discounts or free items."

Team building is often seen as a fun day out for workers. Its effectiveness as a profit increasing tool is sometimes questioned as the team engages in games and activities that appear to have no relationship whatsoever to the work they perform back at the office or work place.

However, there's more to team building than a treasure hunt. It's not just problem solving games involving everyone getting wet on a river, or trying to cross an imaginary crocodile-infested expanse with the minimum of tools at their disposal. There is a purpose, though to be fair, that purpose can sometimes be lost in the translation.

Taking a treasure hunt as an example as it is a fairly popular away day event, it isn't really the strategy that the team implements or how they set about solving the treasure hunt that is important. Achieving the objective - finding the treasure in this case - does indicate that the team can work together effectively, and that is good, but there can be much more to be gained that is not immediately obvious.

Providing they are well structured, playing games and tackling difficult activities on team away days can mean that each team member has the rare and important opportunity to learn things about the other team members that they are highly unlikely to discover in the office or work place.

What they can learn is truly invaluable and something that can bind, bond and meld a team in ways that few other things can. A team can become much more cohesive and coherent as a result with greater focus and considerably greater cross-member appreciation and understanding. The overall result can indeed provide more from team building than any mere treasure hunt can.

The treasure hunt, if that is the game played, can allow each team member to relax in ways that they never do in the work place. The real person starts to emerge. Other team members can see that their line manager, for example, is actually a witty and funny guy. The junior whom no one pays any attention to can come out of his or her shell and be seen as someone with ideas that are constructive and useful. In short, everyone has the opportunity to shine and they usually do too.

This is where the real team building value of the treasure hunt, or whatever game or activity is utilised, lies. The underlying behaviour patterns and ways of thinking through problems of each team member can be discovered by each other team member. Most of it is subconscious understanding and quite subtle, but it tends to be there and it tends to stick too.

These discoveries are then taken back to the work place and put to use. If the away day has been organised and structured right, the end result can be increased profits from a team who find themselves more committed, more engaged and happier doing what they have been doing all along. Everyone's a winner, as they say, and it all starts with a treasure hunt.

Obama pitches mortgage overhaul as housing rallies

Associated Press/Jacquelyn Martin - President Barack Obama smiles as is warmly received before speaking about housing, Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at Desert Vista High School in Phoenix. The president said taxpayers …more  can no longer be on the hook for bad decisions by mortgage lenders. Afterward he will head to Los Angeles to appear on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)  less Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer greets …President Barack Obama tours the …President Barack Obama waves to …President Barack Obama tours the …President Barack Obama waves to …PHOENIX (AP) — Buoyed by an improving housing market, President Barack Obama on Tuesday proposed a broad overhaul of the nation's mortgage finance system, including winding down government-backed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. He declared that taxpayers should never again be left "holding the bag" for the mortgage giants' bad bets.Obama outlined his proposals in Phoenix, the once foreclosure-riddled city at the epicenter of the nation's housing crisis. The housing market in Phoenix, as well as in many other parts of the country, has rebounded robustly, with prices in the southwestern city up 66 percent from the low point in 2011.Despite the nationwide gains, the president said sweeping housing reforms are still needed to ensure that a rejuvenated market doesn't simply "re-inflate the housing bubble." The cornerstone of that effort is winding down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, a proposal with bipartisan support in the Senate."For too long, these companies were allowed to make big profits buying mortgages, knowing that if their bets went bad, taxpayers would be left holding the bag," Obama told a crowd of more than 2,000 at an area high school. He spoke following a tour of a construction company that has been able to hire hundreds of new workers as a result of the region's housing comeback. While the president has previously endorsed overhauling Fannie and Freddie, his remarks Tuesday marked the first time he outlined his specific proposals for doing so.The president wants to replace Fannie and Freddie with a system that would put the private sector, not the government, primarily at risk for loans. The government would still be involved, both in oversight and as a last-resort loan guarantor.Obama is also seeking guarantees that a private sector-led mortgage finance system would still ensure wide homeowner access to popular 30-year mortgages at fixed rates.Making light of criticism from Republicans who have cast him as a big-spending liberal, Obama joked that his calls for deeper private sector involvement "must sound confusing to the folks who call me a socialist."Obama's mortgage reform priorities are largely in line with a Senate measure shepherded by Republican Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee and Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia that would wind down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac within five years. Corker said Obama's remarks were a sign of real and growing momentum behind efforts to shutter the mortgage giants.Once flourishing, Fannie and Freddie were bailed out in 2008 by a $187 billion taxpayer-backed bailout. The two enterprises don't make loans directly, but buy mortgages from lenders, package them as bonds, guarantee them against default and sell them to investors. The enterprises currently own or guarantee half of all U.S. mortgages and back nearly 90 percent of new ones.Obama's trip to Phoenix marked the latest stop on a summertime tour aimed at rallying the public around his economic policies ahead of looming budget fights with congressional Republicans this fall. It was also a return to the city he visited just weeks after taking office in 2009 to tout the government's role in bolstering the housing market. But some of Obama's housing proposals remain stalled in Congress, including sweeping refinancing legislation that would expand eligibility for homeowners who do not have government-backed mortgages. On Tuesday, he reiterated his calls for lawmakers to pass his refinancing proposals, saying they would help homeowners save thousands per year. The president also tried to link his housing proposals to immigration reform, his top second-term legislative priority. He argued that legal immigration would allow more people to purchase homes, thereby raising home values. White House officials also cited a study that showed immigrants accounted for 40 percent of new homeowners nationwide between 2000 and 2010.The nationwide housing recovery has been providing critical support to the economy at a time when manufacturing and business investment have stagnated. Steady job growth and low mortgage rates in the past year have also fueled more home sales. The increased demand, along with a tight supply of homes for sale, has pushed home prices higher and encouraged builders to start more homes and create more construction jobs.Seeking to highlight the broad impact of the housing market, Obama opened his stop in Phoenix with a tour of Erickson Construction, a company that makes building frames for homebuilders in three western states. The White House said the company's workforce has expanded from less than 100 employees at the depths of the recession to more than 580.Just two years ago, the region was in the throes of the worst housing collapse in the country, with prices down nearly 60 percent from their June 2006 peak and banks foreclosing on 70,000 homeowners a year. While the current median home price remains below peak, the levels have risen 66 percent from September 2011. Buyers are plentiful and homes for sale scarce, leading to bidding wars for resale homes. At the high school in Phoenix, students in the audience interrupted Obama with a rendition of "Happy Birthday;" the president turned 52 on Sunday."I'm now 52, and Michelle says I don't look a day over 51," Obama quipped.___Associated Press writer Bob Christie in Phoenix contributed to this report.___Follow Julie Pace on Twitter at http://twitter.com/jpaceDCBecome a fan of our G+ page for the most intriguing stories of the day. … More »Are you on Facebook?
